PIQUA – The Piqua City Commission will consider rate adjustments for sanitation services at its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 4.
The rate adjustment discussion follows the Commission’s decision at its January 28 meeting not to authorize the city manager to enter into a contract agreement with Rumpke Waste & Recycling to provide refuse, recycling and yard waste collection with guaranteed rates for five years with an additional five-year option. Rumpke submitted the sole response to the City’s request for proposals to offer contracted sanitation services.
City of Piqua staff and Commissioners have been considering the transition to contracted sanitation service since July 2024. As staffing, equipment costs and tipping fees continue to escalate, the City is challenged to offer sanitation services at a reasonable rate to customers. Staff will present a three-year forecast of predicted expenses and proposed rate adjustments to the Commission as it evaluates the next steps in service delivery.
The Sanitation Division operates as an enterprise fund functioning independently from other governmental activities and is not supplemented by the City’s General Fund. As sanitation staffing levels remain critically low, please note that City crews may collect refuse and recycling together as necessary for operational considerations.
