DARKE COUNTY – Although there is still time and plenty of activities in March, April is close at hand, especially when it comes to RSVP deadlines. To ensure everyone has plenty of time to RSVP and prepare for early April events, here’s a peek at the first week of April.
To RSVP for any of these upcoming events, you can sign up at the Senior Center or send a text to Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565.
In an effort to provide subjects of broad interest to both men and women within our organization, the DC Seniors are pleased to present Pan Fishing Strategies, led by Chad Browder. Mr. Browder will cover essential topics, including tackle selection, bait, optimal fishing times, and the benefits of maintaining a fishing journal. He will be sharing insights drawn from his extensive experience. This session is open to both seasoned anglers and beginners, serving as a refresher for some and an introduction for those new to fishing. Attendees are encouraged to contribute their perspectives, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Should there be sufficient interest, future fishing trips may be organized.
The class will take place on Monday, April 6th, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. There is no fee to attend; however, donations to the center are always appreciated.
Please RSVP by March 30th. Registration can be completed at the Senior Center or by texting Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565.
Another program designed to appeal to all audiences is Herbs and Microgreens. Participants are invited to join OSU Extension’s ANR and FCS educators, Caden Buscher and Tina McGilvary, for an informative session on the cultivation and nutritional value of homegrown herbs and microgreens. The program will guide attendees through effective methods for growing various popular herbs and microgreens in diverse settings, including garden beds, containers, and indoor environments.
The class will address essential topics such as fundamental growth requirements, harvesting best practices, appropriate storage techniques to preserve freshness, and practical approaches for incorporating these nutrient-rich plants into daily meals. The program is suitable for both beginners and individuals seeking to advance their gardening skills while enhancing their culinary repertoire with fresh ingredients.
The class is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8th, from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Attendance is complimentary; however, contributions to the center are welcome. Kindly submit your RSVP by April 1st as a courtesy.
Garbage is something everyone deals with, but it’s not often a topic of conversation—until now! Join us for Let’s Make a Landfill…What Happens to Your Garbage? On Thursday, April 9th at 1:00 pm Krista Fourman from Darke County Waste Management will explain what happens to garbage after it arrives at the landfill. You’ll also learn about recycling details, special item pick-up dates, shred events, and more. Plus, as part of the class, we’ll be making an edible landfill!
There is no fee to attend; however, donations to the center are always appreciated. Please RSVP by April 2nd.
The Darke County Seniors use Facebook to share updates about schedule changes or cancellations. Most recently, their Family Fun Night & Trivia event, originally set for Friday the 13th from 7–10 pm, was postponed to Friday, March 20th at the same time. The board decided this due to severe high winds and widespread power outages, which posed a real risk of losing power at the Birchwood Senior Center. Hopefully, everyone who RSVP’d received a phone notification or checked our Facebook page for updates.
If you find computers challenging, you’re not alone. To help, we’re once again offering a beginner computer class. For those who feel comfortable with the basics and want to learn more, there’s also an advanced computer class. Both classes will be led by Sharon Moore and take place on Fridays, from April 10th to May 1st. The Beginner Class runs from 1:15–2:00 pm, while the Advanced Class is from 11:30 am–12:30 pm.
There’s no charge for either class, but donations are appreciated. If you’re interested, please RSVP by April 3rd. You will need to bring a laptop with Windows 10 or newer. It is also advisable to bring a mouse. Review the descriptions below to decide which class suits your needs:
Beginner Computer Class:
You’ll learn how to navigate your laptop, create and use a Gmail account, send emails, explore Google Drive, browse the internet safely, and identify reliable websites. Internet safety will also be covered. Greenville High School students will join us to offer more personalized assistance. Advance sign-up is required for planning.
Advanced Computer Class:
You’ll dive deeper into Google Docs, spreadsheets, and create slideshow presentations. You’ll also learn to use Canva and complete small projects. If there are specific topics you’d like to cover, please let Sharon know during the first or second session.
For those seniors who walk on Mondays, effective Monday, March 23rd, the DC Senior Walking Club will be walking outdoors. The group will continue to meet at the Greenville High School to begin their outdoor walk. The group is looking for optional places to walk. If you have any suggestions or wish to join, please reach Wally at (508) 789-3884.
