ARCANUM – Arcanum named Kevin Brackman as the new varsity boys basketball coach for the 2023-2024 season. The Arcanum sixth grade teacher moves up from the Trojans junior varsity coaching position to take over the boys basketball program.

“I’m ready, we’re excited,” said Brackman. “We have a great group of kids and we’re ready to tackle the season.”

The 2012 Milton-Union graduate takes over for veteran coach Roger McEldowney to lead the Trojans boys basketball program. Brackman spent four years at Division I Evansville Central as JV coach and worked with the Southern Indiana men’s basketball program for four year while attending college. Before coming to Arcanum to coach the 2022-2023 Trojans JV team he served as the Houston Wildcats JV boys basketball coach.

“It couldn’t have been a better fit last year working with Roger and being able to learn from him and the year that I had,” Brackman said. “Coach McEldowney had a wealth of knowledge and really knows his X’s and O’s.”

“When this opportunity came to be I couldn’t have been more welcomed,” Brackman added. “It’s a two way street for them to work well with me and me to work well with them. I felt welcomed, they were receptive to my ideas and I was receptive to their ideas especially with the success they had had prior to me becoming their coach. It was an easy transition from last year to this year and being able to bring a new look and a new style to the way that we’re going to play.”

Arcanum graduated seven seniors from the 2022-2023 team while returning five juniors, one sophomore and two freshman for the upcoming season.

“We’re going to look to lean on our returning seniors and then understand that we have some young talent who is going to be able to provide some different things, a different style than we played in the past,” Brackman said. “We’re working on getting them to come together and see what kind of team they can be.”

Coach Brackman gave a little insight into what Trojans’ fans can expect for the upcoming varsity boy basketball season.

“Going to look to get after it on defense but then look to play a little up-tempo – play fast,” Blackman shared. “I think the kids like to play that way. We had some success last year at the JV level playing that way. With the guards that we return from last year’s varsity team, they really like to get out in the open floor and play downhill so we’ve kind of put a premium on this summer playing that way.”

Arcanum will open it’s 2023-2024 season on the road at Greenville Senior High School.
