ANSONIA – Mississinawa Valley’s Cole McGlothlin was dominant on the mound and dangerous at the plate, leading the Blackhawks to a 6-1 WOAC baseball win over the Ansonia Tigers.
McGlothlin fired a complete-game one-hitter, allowing no earned runs while striking out 15 over seven innings. The strong outing came with efficiency, as the Blackhawks’ right-hander kept his pitch count in the 70s.
“Can’t ask for any more from a pitcher,” said Mississinawa Valley coach Kyler Guillozet. “He was super efficient, and his fastball they couldn’t catch up with it.”
McGlothlin also helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season, two runs scored and a stolen base.
“That was one of his better outings,” Guillozet said. “He has had a couple of good ones this year, but that one will definitely stand out.”
Mississinawa Valley backed McGlothlin with a strong offensive night. Sophomore Cooper Nieport went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base, while freshman Bentley Manning finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored.
“We had a lot of hits,” Guillozet said. “All year I couldn’t be more proud of my offense. We have all been hitting the ball well.”
The Blackhawks, who opened the season with four straight losses, have since gone 6-2 to even their record at 6-6.
“We are looking good, but I think we should have won a few more games earlier than we did,” Guillozet said. “All in all, we are a good baseball team. Our bats are starting to come around, and we’re getting a little more efficiency out of pitchers — more strikes, less walks. All that plays into effect.”
Ansonia freshman Sam Evers took the loss for the Tigers, who fell to 1-13 overall and 0-8 in WOAC play.
“When you get one hit and 15 strikeouts, sooner or later we’re going to learn to put the bat on the ball and quit taking big cuts,” said Ansonia coach TJ Phlipot. “We need to be taking nice easy swings and hitting the ball.”
“Little things add up,” Phlipot added. “When you’re young, you can’t battle back from them.”
