DARKE-MERCER COUNTIES – According to new reports, nearly four million more cases of High Path Avian Influenza (bird flu) have been confirmed to have affected 3.8 million commercial chickens and over 86,000 in both Darke and Mercer counties.

The confirmed diseased poultry came from a National Veterinary Services Laboratory in 10 reports on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA).

Procedures are being taken immediately to quarantine the facilities and work to depopulate the infected birds.

Wild birds, geese and other birds are suspected to be the carriers of the disease.

Approximately 6,050,026 commercial birds tested positive for bird flu in the Miami Valley in 2025, according to ODA.
