Be a part of the Darke County Seniors

DARKE COUNTY – Are you a part of the Darke County Seniors? If you haven’t already secured your membership or if you have and want to be part of the planning, Wednesday, August 6th, is an excellent time to increase your involvement. Consider attending the monthly meeting at 3 pm, held in the Birchwood Senior Center. This is open to anyone aged 55+ who likes to volunteer, enjoys sharing ideas, or simply wants to become more involved within the organization.

The DC Seniors work hard on bringing helpful programs as well as popular and requested activities. Presently, there are 24-30 regulars that attend game day, which is held from 1 – 3 pm every Tuesday with room for additional enthusiasts. Popular cards games include Euchre, Hearts, and Hand and Foot. Also increasing in popularity is the tile-based game called Mah Jongg (also spelled Mahjong). Regardless of what game one chooses to play the benefits are numerous and include mental stimulation, social interaction, and motor skills.

The August calendar of events is available on Facebook and through your local news sources within the county. Changes, corrections, or additions can be readily found on Facebook. For those uncomfortable with multimedia technology, posters have been placed in many public locations. However, there are a couple of changes/additions that did not make the posters.

The DC Seniors are pleased to announce the addition of an Alzheimer’s Support Group Café Series offered on Wednesday, August 20th from 6 – 8 pm in the Aspen Room at Birchwood Senior Center. This is the first of recurrent support group offerings which resulted from the “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia” seminar given by Lori Cesaire in July. The Support Group Café’ will be facilitated by trained individuals and designed to support, assist, and educate caregivers, family, friends, and others dealing with the disease of Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

Other events of special interest include:

“Time with Tina.” On Monday, August 11th from 1 – 2:30 pm Tina McGillvary from the Darke County OSU Extension Office will show you how easy and fun it is to preserve fresh vegetables with this no-fuss method! You’ll learn how to make crisp, flavorful refrigerator pickles; no special equipment or canning required. Perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a quick way to enjoy garden-fresh veggies all year long.

“Cooking for One or Two” presented by Eileen Litchfield. The presentation takes place on Thursday, August 14th at 1 pm. Eileen will offer tips for those who routinely cook for one or two.

Craft Day on Thursday, April 21 at 1 pm with Pam Idle, from JAG Healthcare of Union City, leading those interested in the art of rock painting. This is an RSVP event requiring a text or phone call to Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565 by August 14th.

Effective Wednesday, August 6, Line Dancing expands to three hours, offering beginner instruction from noon to 1 pm and intermediate instruction from 1 – 3 pm. The donation remains at $5 for members.

Thursday, August 7th, is free bingo and movie day (with popcorn). Bingo runs from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm and the movie starts at 1 pm. Feel free to pack a sack lunch for Bingo and stay for the movie. The movie is “Blast from the Past,” a 1999 American romantic comedy science fantasy adventure film. The plot is around a young man who grew up in a bomb shelter during the Cold War era and emerges into the modern world 35 years later. The film stars Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, and Sissy Spacek.
