ARCANUM – The Preble Shawnee Arrows took advantage of a quick start and a scoring run down the closing stretch to defeat Arcanum 47-40 in varsity boys basketball action.
“I have to give our guys a lot of credit,” said Arcanum coach, Roger McEldowney. “They have a lot of heart. They’ve been working really hard and they wanted this one bad and they played like it.”
Shawnee jumped out to a nine point 15-6 first quarter lead that would hold up for the win with Arcanum taking periods two, three and four by a combined 34-32 advantage.
Arcanum took the second quarter 13-5 sending the teams to the break with the Arrows holding a slim 20-19 lead.
Arcanum grabbed 21-20 lead in the opening seconds of the third before Preble Shawnee would close out the quarter 13-12 to take a 33-31 advantage to the final period of play.
The game was tied at 36-36 with 6:06 on the fourth quarter clock and 38-38 at 5:03 before the Arrows would use a 9-2 run to close out scoring on the night to earn the conference win.
“They gave their all and as a coach that is you can really ask,” McEldowney said. “It comes down to execution. They probably executed a little better than what we did down the stretch – that’s the difference in the ballgame.”
