SPRINGFIELD – Arcanum senior Alexis Gibbons scored her 1,000th career Lady Trojans varsity point in Wednesday night’s regional play vs Minster.

Gibbons came into the game needing nine points to reach the 1,000-point mark and knocked down a third-quarter basket to give her 10 points on the night, in what would prove to be the final basket of her varsity basketball career, pushing her past the magical number with 1,001 career points.

The third-quarter feat went unnoticed, as there was no game stoppage, no third-quarter presentation, and no fanfare as the regional game continued to play out.

“Lex needed nine to get a thousand, and she got 10, so she’s at one thousand and one,” said Arcanum coach Abbey Moore. “I am happy for her to be able to accomplish that. She works hard and has a bright future at the next level. She’s been an awesome kid to be around these past four years, and I am really going to miss her.”

Gibbons will take her basketball skills to Indiana University East to continue her career while furthering her education.

Long after the Springfield High School gymnasium had cleared out, Gibbons, teammates, and coaches returned from the team’s locker room where Gibbons’ accomplishment was announced to the small remaining contingent of Arcanum coaches, teammates, family, and friends.

Gibbons was presented with a banner and game ball before an appreciative audience.
