Arcanum softball earns conference win over Ansonia

ANSONIA – The Arcanum Lady Trojans defeated the home-standing Ansonia Lady Tigers 15-4 in seven complete innings with Hannah Kendig going the distance for the win.

“We hit, we found holes tonight, we hit really well, everybody did, even the bench players came in,” said Arcanum coach, Mike Morris. “Hopefully we’ll keep this thing rolling now.”

“We have a lot of senior leaders out there but we also have some youth mixing in,” Ansonia coach, David Fisherback. “Coach Jenkins did great with this program and we’re trying to take it to the next level.”

Arcanum came into the night with a 1-3 record having opened the season against four Division I schools.

Arcanum jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one inning of play with Ansonia answering with two runs in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-2 game.

The Lady Trojans plated 2 runs in the top of the third and fourth innings while keeping Ansonia off the board in both innings sending the game to the fifth inning with Arcanum leading 7-2.

“Arcanum’s upper part of the lineup has some good hitters,” Fisherback stated. “We have to continue to improve on some little things. We’re learning but you have to give Arcanum all the credit in the world.”

Ansonia sent a run home in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-3 score after five complete.

The Arcanum Lady Trojans added 4 runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings while Ansonia was going quietly in the bottom of the seventh scoring a single run giving the visiting Lady Trojans an 11 run conference win.

Arcanum freshman right fielder Matty Noe not only hit well on the night knocking in the first run of the game but also made some outstanding plays in the field bringing praise from Coach Morris.

“For a freshman, she has never played that position,” Morris said. “We had a freshman out there and she comes up with some big plays for us.”

Hannah Kendig pitched seven strong innings allowing 3 earned runs, 7 hits, 2 walks while striking out 5.

“Kendig threw great tonight,” Coach Morris noted. “She was on and hopefully that continues.    Hopefully, we’ll keep this thing rolling now.”

Emilie Fout and Jordyn Garbig led Arcanum going 3-5 at the plate with Fout collecting an RBI and 4 runs scored, and Garbig 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Kensie Byrne was 2-2 including a home run, a hit by pitch, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs. Ashlyn Miller was 2-4, a walk, 1 RBI, 2 runs; Matty Noe 2-3, a walk, 1 RBI, 1 run; Ella Flatter, 1-3, a walk, 2 RBIs, 1 run; Cam Garbig 1-1, a walk, 1 RBI; Marli Morris 1-2, a walk, 1 RBI.
