ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans basketball program hosted 85 first through eighth graders at its 2025 Arcanum Girls Basketball Summer Camp.
The four-day camp held two-hour morning sessions for incoming sixth–through eighth–grade Junior High girls and two-hour afternoon sessions for first through fifth graders.
Veteran Lady Arcanum Coach Abbey Moore, assisted by JV Coach Stevie Johnting Zumbrun, 8th Grade Coach Kip Gray, first-year Coaching Assistant Brooke Anderson, and the high school Lady Trojans basketball players. Filling out the 2025-2026 roster includes: Strength and Varsity Assistant Coach Kaitlyn Zell and 7th Grade Coach Taylor Robins.
“Brooke Anderson (class of 2025) is joining our junior high staff this year as an assistant,” Coach Moore noted. “She came all four days of camp and did great. She is one of those kids that you want to keep a part of things.”
Coach Moore explained the camp taught “all kinds of fundamentals” to the young campers.
“Each day we started with defense,” said Moore. “We want to learn how to enjoy playing defense and develop that mindset. That was a big focus every day, and we incorporated a lot of fun games.”
“Summer camp is about bringing these girls in here, not so much just for the younger ones, but also for our older girls as well.” Coach Moore added. “They learn a lot of good things about how to be a leader and how to be a good role model.”
The 2024-2025 Arcanum Lady Trojans are coming off a successful 10-1 WOAC Co-Championship and District Championship season.
“Our mindset as a program is, we’re not satisfied with that,” said Moore. “We want to get more and more.”
Arcanum JV Coach Zumbrun, a former standout Lady Trojans basketball player and NCAA DII player for the Cedarville Lady Yellow Jackets basketball program, weighed in on the Lady Trojans program.
“Fundamentals are huge and Coach Moore expressed that, but the teacher in me comes out when I am with all those girls,” said Zumbrun. “We do a lot of fun things to get their attention, and we always review each day what we’ve learned. We start with the basic fundamentals, and each day we add a little bit more and build up.”
“The future is so bright,” Zumbrun continued. “These high school girls have set the bar, and we’re building this program every day. It starts with the little ones, so having 30 first, second, and third-graders in that small gym is a lot to manage. However, with those high school girls, we work together and get it done each day, and they have a blast. I was proud of them. “I am excited for the season, and we have a bright future.”
“I couldn’t do this week without Coach Stevie Zumbrun,” Moore said. “She has been with me every step of the way. I couldn’t do camp without her.”
“These girls have worked hard all summer, and I can’t say enough about them because the attendance that I have had this summer has been the best in my years coaching,” Coach Moore concluded. “I am extremely proud of them, and we got better this summer, but we still have work to do.”
