COVINGTON – The Ansonia Lady Tigers out-hit Covington 9-5, but several critical errors, including base running miscues, contributed to the Lady Tigers 7-5 Thursday night non-conference loss to the home-standing Covington Lady BUCCS softball team.
“We are a very talented group, but those little mistakes will kill you every time,” said Ansonia coach David Fisherback. “We’re scoring enough, we’re still working on defense. We’re going to work things out.”

Ansonia opened the top of the first with a Jayda Mangen single, with Mangen and Addison Geyer picking up RBIs to give the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 advantage.
The Lady BUCCA took advantage of several Ansonia miscues and three unearned runs to wrangle the lead away from the Lady Tigers to lead 3-2 after three innings.

“When you get two runners thrown out at third, that should only happen once in a blue moon, but we’re aggressive, we have a lot of young kids,” Fisherback stated. “That one dropped fly ball and another error, and they scored three unearned runs, and that makes the difference.”
A double to right off the bat of sophomore Addison Geyer knotted the score at 3-3 in the top of the fifth before Covington took the lead back at 4-3 and used an error to extend its lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Covington extended its lead to 7-3 before the Lady Tigers plated two runs in the top of the seventh in dropping a two-run game.
“We’re still trying to be aggressive,” said Coach Fisherback. “Covington is a very good team, very well coached team. We’re trying to get there; we have some young players.”

Ansonia sophomore Bre Walker pitched well in her first start for the Lady Tigers in a losing cause, allowing five hits and three earned runs over six innings while striking out six and walking six.
“Bri Walker did an outstanding job,” Fisherback noted.
Geyer paced the Lady Tigers 3-4 at the plate, including three RBI.
