PITSBURG – The Ansonia Tigers defeated the Franklin Monroe Jets 12-4 in Thursday night WOAC baseball action.
“We jumped on them early,” said Ansonia assistant coach, Caleb Jones. “Bats kind of went quiet and then the seventh-inning picked it up and scored some runs.”

“We’re just not playing good baseball right now,” said Franklin Monroe coach, Tyler Zimmerman. “This is a few games in a row where we are making a lot of mental mistakes defensively.”
Ansonia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after one-inning of play with Franklin Monroe battling back to plate 3-runs in the bottom of the second sending the game to the third-inning with the Tigers leading 4-3.

The teams played scoreless ball the third, fourth and fifth-innings with Ansonia denting the sixth-inning board with a single run to lead 5-3 after six complete.
The Tigers exploded for seven-runs in the top of the seventh to lead 12-3 with Franklin Monroe coming to the plate for its final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. The Jets added a run in the final inning to fall to the visiting Ansonia Tigers 12-4.

The young Franklin Monroe team starts six underclassmen and sometimes seven.
“It’s a two-run game with one out in the top of the seventh and then the wheels just completely fall off,” Zimmerman said. “We just have to figure out ways to get outs at the end of games. We have not played our best baseball this season – we know it’s in there. We have played good ball, we have competed with teams this year so to see it kind of start to go the other way it’s a little frustrating.”

Trevor Hemmerich pitched 6.2 innings to earn the Ansonia win allowing 1-earned run, 5-hits, 5-walks while striking out five and paced Tigers at the plate going 4-4 with 3-RBIs and 2-runs scored.
“Hemmerich threw a terrific game,” said Jones. “We come in with the expectation of him coming in throwing all seven – he did his job today. Really proud of him.”
Noah Heck closed out the game for Ansonia pitching 0.1 innings in relief.

Keegan Weiss was 2-3 including a double, a walk, 2-RBIS and 3-runs. Landyn Bowman, Nick Burns, Jakob Creager and Gabe Zumbrun each accounted for a hit.
