GREENVILLE — Eighty yards. Fifty-three seconds. One final chance to keep the Little Brown Jug.

The Greenville Green Wave made every second count Friday night, completing a dramatic comeback when junior quarterback Grady Looker connected with senior Isaac Kerg on a 14-yard touchdown pass on the final play for a 41-40 homecoming victory over the Sidney Yellow Jackets.

The winning play, which began with three seconds remaining, capped a frantic drive and a seesaw Miami Valley League battle that brought students, families, and fans pouring onto the field. Greenville retained the rivalry trophy for a second consecutive season.

For coach Steve Channell, the celebration carried the weight of a difficult season marked by injuries and missed opportunities.

“We kept battling back. We kept battling back,” Channell said. “To win a game like that on the last play of the game — because of how our season’s gone — that’s why I was so emotional.”

Greenville trailed 40-35 after Sidney’s Combs scored on a 5-yard run with 53 seconds remaining. The Green Wave stopped the ensuing two-point conversion, leaving the home team needing a touchdown to win.

With two timeouts and 80 yards ahead of him, Looker delivered a simple message.

“The mindset is, we have a minute left. If we score, we win,” Looker said. “That’s what I told the team.”

Looker completed passes to Logan Inman, and three Sidney penalties helped Greenville move into scoring position. The Green Wave reached the red zone with enough time for two attempts at the end zone.

The second produced the moment Greenville had been fighting for all night.

Looker rolled out and found Kerg, who adjusted his route near the back of the end zone, jumped for the pass and secured the winning touchdown.

“Oh my gosh, I felt like it was forever,” Kerg said. “I saw the ball in thin air, and I was like, ‘This is really coming to me.’ And I jumped up for it, held it strong, came down with it, and you could just hear the crowd explode.”

Looker credited his receiver for recognizing the coverage and making the adjustment.

“The corner kind of predicted it, so Isaac stopped,” Looker said. “That’s credit all to Isaac for realizing that he needs to cut that short.”

The finish delivered the last swing in a game that repeatedly forced Greenville to answer.

Sidney built a 14-0 first-quarter lead, scoring on a 12-yard run with 3:57 remaining and a 32-yard touchdown pass with 52 seconds left. Both extra-point kicks were good.

Senior running back Gage Denham began Greenville’s comeback with a 5-yard touchdown run up the middle at the 6:40 mark of the second quarter. Denham also carried for the two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 14-8.

Kerg followed with a weaving 34-yard touchdown run. Rylan Grosch’s extra-point kick gave Greenville a 15-14 lead at halftime.

Sidney needed only eight seconds of the third quarter to regain the advantage.

The Yellow Jackets returned the opening kickoff to Greenville’s 2-yard line, scored on the next play, and added a two-point conversion for a 22-15 lead.

Denham answered with a 3-yard touchdown run with 6:06 left in the third quarter. A failed extra-point attempt left Greenville trailing 22-21.

Sidney extended its lead to 28-21 on a quarterback keeper with 2:28 remaining in the period. The extra-point kick sailed wide.

The fourth quarter brought five touchdowns and increasingly urgent responses from both offenses.

Looker broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run with 9:57 remaining. Greenville’s missed extra-point attempt left Sidney ahead 28-27.

One minute later, Sidney struck for a 55-yard touchdown. Another missed extra point made it 34-27.

Looker then capped Greenville’s next scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Grosch converted the extra point, putting the Green Wave ahead 35-34 with 5:21 remaining.

Sidney responded with a drive that consumed nearly all the remaining time, picking up yardage and moving toward what appeared to be the winning touchdown.

Instead, Combs’ score set the stage for Greenville’s final answer.

“Our offense usually doesn’t do that,” Channell said of the last drive. “But we found a way all night. We just kept finding a way.”

Denham, who scored twice while continuing to battle injuries, called the victory the best of his football career.

“It’s been a rough season with the injuries and all that, but I knew this being such a big game, homecoming week, I would do anything for the team just to pull out this one,” Denham said.

For Kerg, keeping the Little Brown Jug made the finish even sweeter.

“Sidney’s been circled on our calendar,” he said. “We beat them last year. We got the jug back, and to keep it is just awesome. It means everything.”

Channell praised the players’ resolve and the support surrounding them, calling the victory one of the most memorable of his coaching career.

“We had moments in the game where it was very discouraging because we just kept having breakdowns in key areas and key moments,” he said. “But that never discounted the resolve that they kept coming back.”

On a night when neither team could hold the lead for long, Greenville held it when it mattered most.

“The only thing that matters right now is that we scored 41 and they scored 40, and we keep the jug,” Channell said.
