GREENVILLE – Greenville senior heavyweight wrestler Andrew Winner tied the Green Wave all-time pin record, earning a fall at 1:17 in the opening period with a pin over Northmont’s Caleb Ruffin to lead Greenville to a 39-34 non-conference match over the Thunderbolts.

“Our kids fought hard, they wrestled hard, they got after it, and that’s all you ask for,” said Greenville coach David Guillozet. “They do their best, and it shows with a win.”

“It was a good match, it was a fun match,” Guillozet added. “Those close ones are always fun, a little stressful, but it’s good to get a win from a pretty good team.”

Greenville’s Jack Suter (106), Avery Meade (126), Ashton Noggle (132), Layden Wion (150), and Winner (285) each earned pins. William Bush (157) won his match 4-0, and Henry Alread (113) won by forfeit.

Trailing 33-34 and needing a win with one final match remaining, Greenville’s Avery Meade pinned the Bolts’ Carter Grimes to give the Green Wave a come-from-behind 39-34 victory.

Winner recorded his tie-setting pin at 1:17 in the first period, giving the 285-pounder 87 career pins, tying Justin Fletcher’s record set in 2007.

“It’s a big deal,” Coach Guillozet said of Winner’s tying pin. “He has several matches to go, so he’s on his way. Andrew will probably break that record by several pins, and he deserves it. He works hard, and he gets it done. I have nothing but good things to say about Andrew.”

“I have worked all four years to get a lot of pins, and it’s a good achievement, and I’m proud of our team, too,” Winner said. “We did well as a team tonight.”

With his Greenville Senior High School wrestling career winding down and the OHSA wrestling tournament on the horizon, Winner has goals of finishing his career strong.

“Make it as far as I can, get as many pins as possible, and hopefully set that record high,” Winner said. “I have great coaches, and I appreciate them coming every day even though they have kids at home, but come every day and help us.”
