I hope this Newsletter finds you well. A mixture of warm and cool days, as well as scattered rains, have been present in Darke County this past week https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?OH The rains have left standing water in parts of the county, although it seems we haven’t received as much as some nearby counties. Corn silage harvest is largely complete, and some early grain harvest for both corn and soybeans has begun this week as the weather has allowed. Tar spot, Northern Corn Leaf Blight, and Gray Leaf Spot has been spotted in corn, but seemingly at lower levels than the past couple of years. Common weeds have included Common and Giant Ragweed, Lambsquarter, Foxtail, Velvetleaf, and Waterhemp. I hope you all continue to have a safe harvest season and that the weather cooperates.
As we approach the wind-down season in our gardens, now is a great time to join us at the Darke County Garden Roundtable to learn about Common Natural Edible Plants and our Plant of the Month, Pumpkins. Our next session will be held at the OSU Extension Office September 30th at 6:00 p.m.
If you want to learn more about Pumpkins but can’t make it to the Roundtable, stop in at Worch Library on September 2th at 6:00 p.m. We’ll discuss the numerous varieties of pumpkins, proper planting and management, and making the most of your pumpkin patch.
Save the Date of November 6th for the Western Ohio Ag Outlook Meeting. There, we’ll be joined by professionals from Ohio State University Extension, Farm Service Agency, and Cargill will share the latest updates on the current state of the agricultural industry in Western Ohio. More details will be ready shortly and I will share them as soon as they become available.
For those of you attending Farm Science Review, I hope you have a safe, educational, and enjoyable time there. I’ll be spending time there with my Ohio State University Extension colleagues at the Ag Crops, Pesticide Safety, and Livestock Tents, as well as the Field Demonstrations. Feel free to stop in and talk about agricultural for a while!
