Weekly OSU Extension Newsletter: May 15, 2026

I hope this Newsletter finds you well. Temperatures have remained fairly cool the past week, but breaks in the rain have allowed for field work to continue.  (https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?OH). A more detailed breakdown of the current weather is included in the attached Newsletter. Much of the field work recently has consisted of spraying fields, wrapping up planting, and harvesting forages.

Join other local gardeners at the Darke County Garden Roundtable to have some enjoyable discussion about gardening, get your questions answered, and share some of your own wisdom. Our next session will be held at the OSU Extension Office on Thursday, May 21st at 6:00 p.m. We’ll be focusing on Water Management in the Garden and our Plant of the Month is Sweet Potatoes.

I’ll be at Worch Library on May 28th at 4:00 p.m. to discuss the Growing Strawberries. If you have an interest in planting, growing, and harvesting strawberries, I hope to see you there!

Local livestock producers may be interested in attending this year’s Manure Science Review. This OSU event is a great way to advance your knowledge on a critical component of both livestock and crop production—manure. Better yet, MSR will hosted in Maria Stein, Ohio this year, making it quite accessible to farmers in the area. For more information, contact me or view the following link: https://agcrops.osu.edu/newsletter/corn-newsletter/2026-13/2026-manure-science-review.

The next Darke County Ag Breakfast will be Friday, June 19th at 7:30 a.m. at Jack’s Cabin in Greenville.

This week’s Newsletter topics include:

  • Alfalfa Weevil Update
  • Bagworm Update
  • Battle for the Belt
  • Ohio Tick Update
  • Using Body Condition Scoring for Beef Cow Reproduction
  • Weather Update

I hope you enjoy this week’s Newsletter, and as always, never hesitate to reach out to me and let me know how I can best serve you and all of Darke County.

Best,
