The Lady Indians got on the board first to take a 2-0 at 6:54 in the opening period and took advantage of Versailles turnovers to hold a 9-8 lead before Allison Schwartz knocked down a five-foot jumper in the lane to give Versailles a 10-9 lead with 1:31 on the first quarter clock that would hold up for the score at the end of one compete.

“We were kind of careless with the ball,” said Versailles coach, Tracy White. “We need to be able to knock down some shots.”

Versailles continued to struggle with second-quarter turnovers but a stingy Lady Tigers defense limited the visitors to three second-quarter points while adding nine points to the board led by Katey Litten’s five points including the team’s lone 3-pointer of the night sending the teams to the break with Versailles up 19-12.

“The second and third quarters we weren’t reversing the ball and looking inside,” Coach White noted. “We kept the ball on the outside. When you get the ball into the post now they all collapse and our guards get more wide-open shots.”

Versailles came out strong at both ends of the court in the fourth taking the final quarter 13-6 with Wagner accounting for six points including a perfect 2-2 at the free throw line to earn a double-digit conference win.

“It’s a continual work in progress,” said White. “Something we’re going to keep working on in order to grow.”

Wagner led Versailles and all scorers with a game-high 14 points.
