Versailles falls to once beaten St. Henry

VERSAILLES – With a trip to the playoffs on the line for Versailles, the Tigers fell short against the once-beaten St. Henry Redskins 26-20. The Tigers finished the season 4-6 and will miss the playoffs.

The Tigers scored on their first possession, using 5:13 of the first quarter on a 73-yard drive. Landyn Knapke scored on a three-yard run and Cale Garland kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

The Redskins were forced to punt, but pinned the Tigers inside their five-yard line. The Tigers would punt, and the Redskins would start at the Tigers’ 35-yard line. St. Henry quarterback Charlie Werling would score on a ten-yard run to tie the game. Werling scored all four of the Redskin touchdowns.

St. Henry attempted a 22-yard field goal with 6:50 left in the second quarter, but the attempt was no good. The Tigers turned the ball over on their next possession. The Redskins then moved the ball, but an interception before the half left the teams tied at halftime.

The Tigers would take a 14-7 lead on a pick-six by Ethan Wilker. Wasting no time, the Redskins’ Werling scored on a three-yard run to tie the game mid-way through the third quarter.

The Redskins took their first lead of the night on the first play of the fourth quarter. The extra point was no good, and the Redskins led 20-14. Werling would score his fourth touchdown from one yard late in the fourth quarter.

Down 26-14, the Tigers would not quit and scored with 1:03 left in the game. With a 26-20 deficit, the Tigers tried an onside kick. The kick would go out of bounds, resulting in the redskins running out the clock to close the game.
