VERSAILLES – When Versailles and New Bremen play, the game is usually decided in the fourth quarter. Friday night, the game came down to the last play. The game was back and forth all night. The Cardinals took the early lead with a 15-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. The Tigers answered right back with a 24-yard pass to Kade Schwartz to tie the game.
The Tigers’ Schwartz stopped the next Cardinal possession with an interception. The Tigers would take a 13-7 lead with a seven-yard Landyn Knapke run. The Cardinals answered before the end of the first half with a 74-yard pass to take a 14-13 halftime lead.
The Cardinals took a 20-13 lead on a 78-yard pass in the third quarter. The Tigers answered with a 12-yard pass to Schwartz with 10:33 left in the game, but missed the extra point to trail 20-19.
Versailles took a 25-20 lead on a Knapke two-yard run with 1:03 left in the game. The Cardinals, with one timeout and little time on the clock, found a way to pull out the win with a 15-yard quarterback run on fourth down to keep the drive alive with seconds on the clock. The Cardinals clocked the ball, and with one second left.
“You’ve got to hand it to New Bremen,” said Versailles coach Ryan Jones. “They had not much time left; they executed the two-minute drill really well. Proud of the way our guys fought.”
Versailles had two missed extra points and failed to convert a two-point conversion on their last score of the game.
