WEST MILTON – The Versailles football team overcame a slow start to take down the Milton-Union Bulldogs 27-6 Friday night.
The Tigers’ offense could not get started as the Bulldogs’ opening drive chewed up eight minutes of the first quarter.
“It was tough sledding there; we knew it would be difficult inside versus the stout defensive linemen.” Versailles coach Ryan Jones said. “They gave us some things they haven’t shown before.”
While the Bulldogs held the ball, the Tigers held Milton-Union scoreless. With a fourth and one at the 21, the Tiger defense held.
The Tiger offense struggled with penalties and a couple of bad snaps that stopped drives. That all changed midway through the second quarter when the defense held the Bulldogs on three straight plays and forced a punt.
Versailles took over at the 50-yard line. They moved to the 33, where Landyn Knapke took a toss around the left side, broke a tackle, and went to pay dirt. The extra point was good, and with 3:33 left in the first half, the Tigers led 7-0. Knapke would score again before the half as the Tigers took a 14-0 lead.
Both teams would go scoreless in the third quarter, but Knapke would get his third touchdown of the night on a four-yard run to start the fourth quarter. Sam Albers scored on a one-yard run to close out the scoring for the Tigers. The Bulldogs would score with a minute left in the game on a long pass against the Tigers’ reserve defense to make it 27-6. The extra point was no good.
