VERSAILLES – Greenville jumped out to a 6-1 lead at 5:08 in the opening period before Versailles found its stride to knot the score at 7-7 and 9-9 and push out to a 15-10 lead after one-quarter of play.
“It always seems like teams come out with a slow start – just something about Christmas,” said Versailles coach, Travis Swank. “We were able to bounce back. Our defense tonight really helped us come through with this game.”
Period No. 2 saw both teams struggle to find their shooting range with the Tigers taking the period 7-2 sending the teams to the break with Versailles holding a 22-12 advantage. Carson Heitkamp accounted for all seven Versailles second-quarter points.
“We just have to put the ball in the basket a little bit more,” Swank stated. “I’m looking forward to the day when we can finish around the rim a little bit better.”
AJ Griesdorn paced Versailles with eight third-quarter points to stretch the Tigers’ lead to 37-21 after three complete.
Greenville continued to struggle getting the ball to drop with Versailles putting eight players in the fourth quarter scoring column taking the final period 19-8 to earn the non-conference win.
“Our offense isn’t clicking right now,” said Coach Swank. “We’re going to have to rely on our defense to bail us out especially here early. We’re going to rely on that until we can get our offense fixed.”
Versailles got balanced scoring with nine players putting points in the book led by 15 points each from Jace Watren and Heitkamp.
