VERSAILLES – The Versailles Lady Tigers handed the visiting Arcanum Lady Trojans a 58-35 non-conference loss in Tuesday night action.

“We’re meshing, we’re able to run through our sets and our offenses and getting better at doing those small things,” said Versailles coach Tracy White following the game. “We’re getting better at setting screens, better at cutting hard, cutting for a purpose versus just moving, and then we’re finding the girls and making passes as well.”

Versailles jumped out to a 9-0 lead at 5:29 in the opening quarter, with Alexis Gibbons hitting for six Arcanum points to close out the period on an 11-10 run, with the Lady Tigers taking a 19-11 lead after one complete. Sarah Stammen led Versailles with seven first-period points, including a 3-pointer, and Kennedy Hager knocked down two treys for the Lady Tigers.

“We got on a run early tonight, but Arcanum still worked hard and did everything they could to bring it back into it, and pressed and changed defenses,” White stated.

“I feel like we kind of gave it to them there in the beginning,” said Arcanum coach Abbey Moore. “No matter who it is on the floor, all five have to give it your all. To begin the game we weren’t all five there.”

Arcanum struggled to find the basket in period No. 2 as Taylor Wagner put eight points in the scoring column, leading Versailles to a 14-3 second quarter, sending the teams to the break with the Lady Tigers holding a comfortable 33-14 advantage.

The Lady Trojans battled back to take the third period 13-9, led by seven Gibbons points, with the teams going to the fourth with Versailles up 42-27.

“The third quarter was probably our shining moment of the night if you could say we had one,” Moore said. “We came out with a little bit of fire there, cut it to 11 at one point, and gave ourselves a chance, and then you’re gassed and have a hard time getting over that hump.”

Grace Osborn led Versailles to a 16-8 fourth quarter with seven points, giving the Lady Tigers a 23-point win.

“Our girls played really well,” said Coach White. “We got a little bit laid back in the third quarter and lost our intensity defensively, which then translated into the offense, turning the ball over and going one-on-one and one pass shot and back to some of those old habits, but the nice thing was we were able to overcome that and come back in the fourth quarter strong.”

“Some good take-a-ways from it, but you can’t put yourself in that situation at the beginning of the game,” Moore said. “You have to come out ready to play, and you have to come out motivated.”

Versailles was perfect at the line going 6-6 while the Lady Trojans struggle at the charity stripe hitting 4-of-10.

Alexis Gibbons led Arcanum and all scorers with a game-high 17 points. Versailles put three Lady Tigers in the scoring column with double-digits: Wagner 14, Hager 13, and Sarah Stammen 11 points.
