UNION CITY – Watch out bad boys and girls, the Union City Police Department is now equipped with an armored tactical vehicle for its Special Entry Tactical Team (SETT).
The Union City Police Department is proud to announce the acquisition of a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle through the federal government surplus program.
Originally purchased by the U.S. Government for $412,000, the MRAP was obtained at no cost to Union City, saving taxpayers a substantial amount while adding a significant asset to the department’s resources.
The MRAP is a robust and reliable vehicle designed to provide enhanced safety and capabilities in critical situations such as high-risk warrant service, natural disasters, or other emergencies requiring secure transport or rescue. Its inclusion in the department’s fleet represents a commitment to ensuring the safety of both officers and the community.
“We are thrilled to have this resource available to our department,” said Director of Public Safety Mark Ater. “Not only does it come to us without any cost to our city, but having a skilled mechanic on staff ensures that we can maintain the vehicle effectively and ready for use. While we hope it remains a seldom-needed tool, we are confident it will serve its purpose when the situation arises.”
In addition to its use in Union City, the department has expressed a willingness to share the MRAP with surrounding law enforcement agencies in need.
“We are more than willing to make this equipment available to assist other agencies in the region should the need arise,” Ater added.
The acquisition highlights the department’s proactive approach to maximizing resources, enhancing public safety, and supporting regional law enforcement collaboration
The armored vehicle was previously used in Porter County, Ind., and will soon display the Union City Police Department name at the top, according to Ater.
