VERSAILLES – Turnovers and penalties will cost wins. The Versailles Tigers learned the lesson Friday night against Minster, falling 14-12 in a game in which the Tigers had three interceptions and a fumble.
Versailles scored first on a 19-yard pass to Kade Schwartz to take a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter. The Wildcats scored late in the second quarter on a three-yard run on fourth down to take a 7-6 lead. The Tigers threw their first interception of the night, and it was a pick 6, and Minster took a 14-6 lead.
The Tigers took over at their own 22 and moved quickly down the field. With 26 seconds left in the half, the Tigers were set up at the Wildcat 29-yard line. The drive would end on their second interception of the night at the eight-yard line.
Versailles cut the lead to 14-12 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. They went for two, but came up inches short of tying the game. The defense took over the game in the second half, holding the Wildcats to 37 yards.
Landyn Knapke took a punt to the Wildcat 30, and Versailles looked to be in business. The Tigers had a first down at the 20, but fumbled, and Minster took over at the 23-yard line. Versailles had one last chance inside the Wildcat 30, but threw their third interception of the night at the Wildcat four-yard line with less than a minute left.
“Whenever you turn the ball over that many times against a solid team like Minster, it’s gonna be real tough to win.” Coach Jones said. “Even with the turnovers, we still had a chance there at the end.”
The Wildcats went into victory formation to end the game.
