NEW MADISON – The Tri-Village Patriots defeated the visiting Dixie Greyhounds 70-33 with a strong second half, giving the Patriots a running clock to close out the night.
“We have a skilled group of kids,” said veteran Tri-Village coach Josh Sagester. “We’re a little bit young, but we continue to get better as we go along.”
Tri-Village took a 7-0 lead to open first-quarter play before settling on a 15-10 advantage with one period in the book.
Period No. 2 mirrored the opening quarter, with Tri-Village taking the quarter 14-10, sending the teams to the break with the Patriots leading 29-20.

Tri-Village upped its game coming out of the halftime break with 3-pointers to fall. The Patriots took the third 20-6 with Griffin Richards knocking down 12 points, including his second and third treys of the night and two Brecken Gray 3-pointers, giving Tri-Village a 49-26 lead with one quarter to play.
“Griffin is a really good point guard for us,” Sagester said of his sophomore. “He can get to the rim, is dynamic with the basketball, can finish around the rim, and tonight he was able to make some perimeter shots, which opens that up for him. He did a good defensive job on Emerick and negating too much damage there.”
The Patriots outscored the Greyhounds 21-7 in the fourth, with seven players scoring, to lead 68-33 at 0:33, putting a running clock in play.

The Patriots’ defense held the Greyhounds to 13 second-half points while, for the game, doubling up on the boards with 6’6” sophomore Dom Black strong on both ends of the court while scoring 12 points on the night.
“We were good defensively all night,” said Coach Sagester. “Dom was a tough guard for them in the paint. He established himself early, which helped us, and obviously, they were doubling Trey, so what we saw was other guys were capable of making some plays for us, and that is a sign of a really good basketball team.”

Tri-Village junior Trey Sagester came into the night as the WOAC’s leading scorer with a 25.4 per-game average and was double and triple-teamed on defense, allowing the sharpshooter also to show his ability to distribute the ball to teammates as he scored seven points on the night.
“We are constantly seeing various defenses on a couple of guys, one in particular,” said Coach Sagester. “What this has shown us is we have some firepower around him, and that was on display tonight.”
“He’s seen a lot of things, and I was proud that he didn’t force and found teammates,” added Sagester. “Teammates were able to produce, which is a good thing. It’s a feather in our cap as we go down the line here and hopefully do some special things.”

Tri-Village put 10 players in the scoring column for the game, with Richards leading the Patriots and all scorers with a game-high 22 points.
