GREENVILLE – The Greenville Citizens Baseball League (GCBL) held its tenth annual three-day rec ball Tyler Kuhn Memorial Baseball Tournament at Greenville’s Sater Heights Park, with weekend sweltering heat settling in.

“It is very, very hot out here,” said GCBL Commissioner Brent Short. “We have young kids from eight on up motoring through, drinking liquids and battling the heat, and doing a great job.”

The annual tournament is held to honor Tyler Kuhn, a 2012 Greenville Senior High School graduate who tragically lost his life in a car accident on October 2, 2012.

Kuhn wore No. 10 for the Greenville Green Wave high school baseball team. He was the team’s starting centerfielder and stood for everything right in the game of baseball.

No. 10 continues to stand out boldly on the dark green outfield fence on the main diamond, home of the Greenville Senior High School baseball team.

“I wasn’t fortunate enough to know Tyler, I wasn’t in Greenville yet, but I have heard a lot of good things about him and what he represented,” Short stated. “This tournament shows the kids what he would want to see as community members and kids playing baseball and enjoying life like he did.”

The weekend tournament, comprising strictly recreational ball teams, drew 14 teams to Greenville for the annual event. Rec ball is affordable and allows young players to enjoy the game of baseball without the expenses of select ball.

“We are competing with two other surrounding tournaments, which hurt us this year,” said Short. “We’re going to have to look at the date of this tournament.”

“This is all about the kids and the kids enjoying themselves and having fun, so even if we lose a little money, it’s worth it,” Short added.

Short thanked the GCBL board, parents, families, umpires, coaches, and all who helped make the tournament a success.

“I appreciate everyone who is involved in this,” Short concluded.
