GREENVILLE – The Darke County Foundation hosted its 13th annual Sunshine 5K Race on Saturday in Greenville City Park—a record 660 people registered for the event, which raised money for eight local non-profit organizations.
“This event is a shining example of what makes our community strong,” said Christy Prakel, director of the Darke County Foundation. “Most participants weren’t out to win a prize or run their fastest time. They were here because of their commitment to a cause that was important to them.”
The proceeds from the Sunshine 5K benefitted local organizations that improve the lives of Darke County residents, including the Cancer Association of Darke County, Darke County Pregnancy Help Center, DeColores Montessori School, Edison College Foundation, Final Bow Center for Children’s Performing Arts, LifeWise Academy Greenville, LifeWise Academy Versailles, and Y.O.L.O. of Darke County.
“These groups make a meaningful difference for others, whether it’s through education, the arts, health and well-being, or civic beautification,” Prakel stated.
Participants of the Sunshine 5K could direct their registration money towards one of these groups of their choice.
“The energy and enthusiastic atmosphere were invigorating,” Prakel said. “There were so many smiling faces, lively chatter, and camaraderie as participants enjoyed a walk or run through scenic Greenville City Park.”
Homemade cookies, fruit drinks, music, and prizes awaited the runners at the finish line as they crossed the finish line.
“Volunteer trustees of the Darke County Foundation put in many hours to organize this event,” noted Prakel. “We also have the support of about 100 sponsors that enable us to raise about $25,000. We are especially grateful to our lead sponsor Reid Health, and other major sponsors, Wayne HealthCare, Family Health, and U.S. Bank.”
