Summer Reading begins June 4th
Things are heating up at Greenville Public Library just in time for summer!
Beginning Wednesday, June 4, we’ll be hosting our annual Summer Reading program for all ages! To kick off the festivities, we’re having an all-day party, complete with a Lemonade Bar from 1 to 4 p.m. Stop by to have a cookie and make your favorite flavor or try something new!
All kids who register on the 4th will be entered into a drawing for a special Color Your World-themed prize basket! Crafts will be available in the Storytime Room for kiddos as well.
To participate, kids 10 and under who register will receive a booklet they can use to track their reading. Each week, they’ll be asked to read 20 minutes a day for five days. Once completed, they can turn in their sheets at the Circulation Desk for weekly incentive prizes. Each entry will also be placed into the grand prize drawing for a Nintendo Switch as well as other awesome prizes!
Ages 11 to 18 can pick up a reading sheet to track minutes read this summer. For each 500 minutes, an entry slip can be returned to the Circulation Desk for an incentive. There’s no limit to how many slips you can enter, and each entry goes towards the grand prize drawing for a pair of Beats Headphones or other cool prizes!
Adults: It’s time for you to be rewarded for all the reading you do, too!
Whether you read fiction, nonfiction, audiobooks, e-books, or magazines, you can enter to win a wide variety of prizes during our annual Summer Reading Program!
This year will feature six fun and fabulous prize baskets to choose from, including a cast iron package, a tailgating kit, and even a wine basket! (Must be 21 years of age to be eligible for this prize!)
As in the past, you can fill out a slip for everything you read, then place that entry into the drawing of your choice. In addition to being entered into that prize drawing, all entries will be included in the grand prize drawing for a 30-inch Masterbuilt Digital Electric Smoker!
Entries will be collected until 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 26 and will not be accepted after this time. The prize drawing will take place on Monday, July 28, with winners being notified by phone.

GPL helps keep local kids fed this summer
This summer, Greenville Public Library is partnering with Children’s Hunger Alliance to ensure no child goes hungry while school is out.
Food distribution will begin on Monday, June 2nd, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Each weekly allotment is filled with shelf-stable staples that will feed one child. We will have supplies for 100 kids each week, with kits being first-come, first-served.
No pre-registration is required, but there is paperwork involved in the first week, so parents need to accompany their children to get signed up.
Food distribution will occur every Monday, with the last pickup date designated for August 18. The pickup times of 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays will be followed for the duration of the program. Unfortunately, food can only be distributed during the designated pickup times on Mondays.

Movie Madness reigns at GPL in June
Love movies? Here at Greenville Public Library, so do we! And this summer, we’re pulling out all the stops!
The first will be shown on Friday, June 6, beginning at 1 p.m. In memory of D-Day, stop by and watch the first two episodes of the captivating miniseries, Band of Brothers. Watch as the Allied forces prepare for and storm the beaches of Normandy in the largest seaborne invasion in history, which included attacks by land, air, and sea. Kids should be accompanied by an adult for this event due to the graphic nature of the content. The run time of this presentation is two hours.
On Thursday, June 12, we have something for the young adult crowd. At 1 p.m., we’ll be showing the 2024 blockbuster hit, Twisters, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos. This action thriller is rated PG-13 with a run time of two hours and two minutes. As always, snacks will be provided for this free event open to ages 11-18.
Last, but certainly not least, is our monthly Classic Movie Matinee. On Thursday, June 26, we’ll be going back to the 80s for the cult classic action adventure, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, starring Harrison Ford as Indy. This PG-rated film has a run time of two hours.
Outside snacks and drinks are welcome at all of our movies! Sweaters are also recommended for anyone who is easily chilled.

The place to be for kids this summer is GPL
Magic, science, and puppets galore are in store for attendees of our Family Fun Days this summer at Greenville Public Library!
Every Wednesday in June and July, we’ll have something exciting on the docket for families to enjoy. From our Summer Reading Kickoff & Lemonade Bar on June 4th until the end-of-summer Carnegie Carnival on July 30th, GPL is the place to be!
We’re also bringing back our School-Age Tuesday programs. This year will feature Sand Art, Tie-Dye, Sun Catcher Painting, and a Sidewalk Chalk Challenge for ages 6 and up. Just like in previous years, space is limited for these events, so registration is required and will begin on June 4. For dates and times, grab a brochure at the Circulation Desk or check out the calendar on our website, greenville-publiclibrary.org
And have no fear! Our year-round favorites continue throughout the summer months. Storytimes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week at 11 a.m. Kiddos from birth to age five are welcome to join Miss Joanna for a few fun stories, some catchy songs you can’t help but dance to, and a craft at the end.
Lego Clubs will be held at their usual times of 4:30 p.m. on the first Thursday in June and July. Build along with the monthly theme or go rogue and create something completely unique… and have a snack while you do! Duplos are available so the littles in your life can play along, too!
