DARKE COUNTY – The Darke County Senior Center has experienced significant growth over the past year, making it increasingly important for individuals to RSVP for events they plan to attend. This process is a necessary courtesy for both the participant and the organizer.
This courtesy benefits both participants and organizers, ensuring an accurate head count and a positive experience for all.
All the events are managed by the volunteer board of directors and trustees who are present before, during, and after each activity. Some classes have limited capacity, such as fitness sessions, which must comply with safety regulations regarding instructor-to-participant ratios. Other classes, such as crafting classes also require advanced registration to guarantee adequate supplies for each registered member to complete their project.
Recently, several classes filled up quickly—even before the registration deadlines—creating challenges for those unable to secure a spot. The directors are working on solutions, but seniors are encouraged to register early at the Senior Center or contact Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2566 to ensure participation.
The Annual Senior Soup was one of the center’s most recent and biggest events, attracting 56 attendees. It was a heartwarming scene, with senior men and women socializing over homemade soup prepared by members and directors. Those unable to join missed a delicious array of options: vegetarian noodle, shrimp gumbo, seafood bisque, broccoli and cheese, white bean chili, taco soup, potato soup, chili, ham, and bean, plus vegetable and ham.
Theresa Kress, Board Trustee and Programs Committee member, facilitated an engaging “Learn About Darke County Seniors” Bingo Game. Attendees gained insight into the organization while participating in the activity and competing for sweet treat prizes, fostering a positive atmosphere throughout the event.
The center is open to anyone aged 55 or older, with a $2 annual membership. The organization can be found on Facebook, has monthly calendars available at the center, and can take questions by calling the RSVP contacts, Wally or Mary.
