GREENVILLE – Spirit Medical completed another EMS Bootcamp open to all high school juniors and seniors exploring career options. The week-long camp introduces young people to the field of emergency medical services (EMS). Activities included Ambulance Driving, CPR, EMT Skills, and Stop the Bleed.
Nine students completed the bootcamp on Friday, June 13th: Savannah Garren, Alexa Thompson, Maddie Larsh, Jocelin Smith, Murphy Gantt, Aiden Pease, Emmitt Fore, Maddison Wolf, and Cadence Wolf.
“The idea of boot camp is for people who are interested in the medical field, allowing them to get hands-on experience,” said Brian K. Hathaway, President and CEO of Spirit EMS. “Many people don’t have the opportunity to experience what the career field is going to look like later on in life, so being able to do this and walk away with certifications, CPR, and First Aid, and how to run an AED and Stop the Bleed. They learn all of those kinds of things during class.”
Hathaway added, “We take it one step further by allowing them the opportunity to drive the ambulance, the opportunity to do different amazing things.”
Alexa Thompson received the Spirit Medical Transport $1,000 Scholarship following graduation from the EMS Bootcamp.
Campers learn about the various opportunities available in the medical field, including a chance to join Spirit Medical.
“There are some that aspire to do things that are going to require college and some that want to be able to come out and be able to do a job and help their community right away,” said Hathaway, “and EMS is one of those fields.”

“We do three to four EMS Classes a year,” said Hathaway. “If they’re not sure that this is something that they want to do, we have a ride-along program that we allow them to come in and ride with us for a shift or two to see if they think that this is something that they want to do. We certainly understand this field is not for everyone because it is not a 9-5 Monday through Friday job, so you have to be adaptable with that.”
