XENIA – Greenville’s pitching duo of junior Lizzie Shaffer and sophomore Ella Oswalt combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter Wednesday, leading the Lady Wave to a 13-0 Miami Valley League run-rule win over the Xenia Lady Buccaneers.
Shaffer worked the first three innings, allowing no hits and no walks while striking out four to earn the win. Oswalt closed out the final two innings, also surrendering no hits and no walks while striking out four as Greenville secured the shutout.
“Great day for Lady Wave Softball,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “Kids played hard and fast. Solid effort again from the two pitchers combining for a no-hitter.”
Greenville wasted no time getting on the board, erupting for five runs in the top of the first inning. Lizzie Shaffer singled to center field, Rielynn Davidson doubled to left field, Xenia committed an error, Jordyn McMullen singled down the left field line, and Lily Brubaker added a single to center field as the Lady Wave quickly built a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Wave continued to swing the bats in the second inning, plating four more runs to take command at 9-0. Ella Oswalt doubled down the left field line to drive in a run, Shaffer followed with an RBI single, Kendall Cromwell singled down the left field line to score another, and McMullen added another RBI single down the left field line.
Greenville pushed its advantage to 10-0 in the third when Shaffer delivered another run-scoring single to center field.
The Lady Wave added the finishing touch in the top of the fifth when Oswalt launched a three-run home run to center field, extending the lead to 13-0.
“Ella hit one out,” Newland noted.
Oswalt also led Greenville offensively, driving in four runs on two hits. She doubled in the second inning and blasted the three-run homer in the fifth. Shaffer had a big day at the plate as well, going 3-for-3, while Leah Force and McMullen each added multiple hits.
In all, Greenville pounded out 15 hits in the victory.
Xenia’s Tessa Salyers took the loss, allowing 13 runs, six earned, on 15 hits over five innings. She struck out none and walked two.
“Fun team win and day at Xenia,” said Newland. “Get a league win.”
Greenville will return home Saturday for a noon start against Covington and Wayne.
“Excited for Saturday with Covington and Wayne heading to town – noon start,” Coach Newland concluded.
