NEW MADISON – The Tri-Village Patriots defeated the 4-1 Thurgood Marshall Cougars 59-42 in non-conference varsity boys basketball on a night Patriots’ Trey Sagester needed 19 points to register his 1000th career point, which came at 0:43 in the third quarter of action halting play as the junior went into the stands presenting his mother with the record-breaking game ball.

“Defensively, we did a pretty good job,” Tri-Village coach Josh Sagester said following the game. “We held them to 20 points in the first three quarters.”

Before starting the varsity game, Tri-Village hosted the Night of Champions, honoring the 1985 State Semi-Final Softball team and the 2015 State Champion 30-0 Boys Basketball team. The 1985 softball team is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and the 2015 boys basketball team is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Tri-Village jumped out to a 9-2 lead at 5:24 in the opening quarter while earning its first double-digit lead, 14-4, with 3:35 on the clock on their way to an 18-4 first-quarter advantage paced by seven Dom Black points.

Period No. 2 proved to be low scoring with the Patriots taking the quarter 9-6 led by five Trey Sagester points sending the teams to the break with Tri-Village up 27-10.

“We were pretty good defensively, especially in the first half,” Sagester noted. “Offensively, we were a little stagnant and didn’t shoot extremely well in the first half.”

Sagester hit for 10 third-quarter points, including his 1,000th career point, leading Tri-Village to a 16-10 third period, giving the Patriots a 43-20 lead with one quarter to play.

“I think he pressed a little bit early,” Coach Sagester said of Trey’s 1,000th point. “Anytime that is hanging over your head, it takes a minute or two. Once he got it, he settled down and made a few perimeter shots for us.”

“A really good night for him and our family,” he continued. “It’s a culmination of a lot of time and hours put in when nobody is watching. That is how you continue to develop and get better … and of course, he has some really good teammates around him who do a good job of finding him in position to be successful.”

Thurgood Marshall battled back in the fourth, taking the period 22-16. Sagester accounted for 10 fourth-quarter points, including two 3-pointers, giving the Patriots the Monday night win.

“We got it going the second half, but for the most part, defensively, we were pretty good and pretty good on the glass,” Sagester stated. “Late there, we struggled a little defensively rebounding, but for the most part, a pretty good game plan.”

Sagester led Tri-Village and all scorers with a game-high 29 points.
