ARCANUM – The Arcanum Public Library will celebrate the unveiling of a vibrant new mural in its children’s area with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29th. Community members are invited to attend this special event, which will include light refreshments and a coloring activity for children.
The new mural is the result of a collaborative effort between the Darke County Center for the Arts (DCCA), The Darke County Art Trail, and the Arcanum Public Library. Funding for the project was generously provided by the Greenville Rotary Club, Darke County Center for the Arts/Anna Bier Art Gallery, and the Arcanum Public Library.
The Arcanum Public Library Board of Directors selected professional artist Phil Wood of Fort Recovery to create the new mural. Phil Wood developed the original design and was joined by Veronica Wood, who assisted in bringing the colorful artwork to life. Phil Wood developed the design for the mural following the library’s prompt “The Places Books Can Take You.” Viewers will be delighted to find local flare in the mural, including the former Arcanum water tower and a Trojan mask.
The mural reflects the spirit of imagination, learning, and creativity that defines the Arcanum Library’s youth services. Johanna Hill, Associate Director for the Arcanum Library, shared her experience with the project, noting “The artist was a pleasure to work with throughout the process, demonstrating both professionalism and a thoughtful understanding of the space and its young audience. The support and guidance provided by the Anna Bier Gallery were exceptional from start to finish.”
In addition to enhancing the library’s children’s area, the mural represents an important milestone for the Darke County Art Trail, serving as its first expansion into the Village of Arcanum. The addition broadens the reach of the county-wide public art initiative, which celebrates local creativity while encouraging residents and visitors to explore communities throughout Darke County.
“We’re excited to celebrate this partnership and the positive impact it will have on families visiting the library,” said Jennifer Overholser, Artistic Director of Visual Art for DCCA.
According to Hill, “This project not only enhances the library environment for children and families, but also connects the library to the broader arts community. The mural’s inclusion in the Darke County Art Trail further highlights the importance of accessible public art and strengthens community engagement.”
New printed maps for the Darke County Art Trail are in the works to include the Arcanum Library mural.
The public is encouraged to attend the July 29th ribbon cutting and help celebrate this newest addition to both the Arcanum Public Library and the growing Darke County Art Trail.
