GREENVILLE – The Greenville American Legion Post 140 dropped a 15-10 baseball game to perennial powerhouse Napoleon River Bandits Post 300 in Tuesday night action.
“A lot of guys were concerned about their friend,” said Post 140 coach Chad Henry. “One of the players was in an accident before the game, and there was a lot of emotion here, but the guys wanted to show up and still play for him and do well.”
Napoleon jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one inning of play, with Greenville Post 140 tacking on 3 runs in the bottom of the second to lead 4-3.
The River Bandits scored 3 runs in the top of the third while Greenville Legion put 2 runs on the board in the bottom of the inning, sending the game to the fourth with the teams tied at 6-6.
Neither team got in the scorebook in the fourth inning. Napoleon added two runs in the top of the fifth with Greenville Post 140 taking a 2-run lead, posting four runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 10-8.
The 2-run lead was short-lived with Post 300 scoring 2 runs in the top of the sixth to knot the score at 10-10 after six complete.
The visitors put the game in the win column, outscoring Greenville 5-0 in the seventh inning to secure the win.
“That is one of the premier programs in the state,” Henry said. “We always do a home and away with them. They have good baseball players from a good background, and that is how you get better, you take on teams like that.”
The big difference in the game came down to errors. Post 140 committed six errors while Napoleon played error-free ball.
“We lost by five runs, we made six errors,” Henry noted. “You can’t give a team like that six extra outs. They gave us none, so they play error-free ball, they beat us by five.”
“We’ll learn from it,” Coach Henry added. “We’ve made these mistakes before, we’ll learn from these, we’ll clean it up.”
