New research has revealed the luckiest lottery states, with Ohio coming out on top.

Social casino website McLuck analyzed 2023 state lottery data for all states that publicly provide prize information to determine which states have the highest winnings per draw.

Ohio emerged as the luckiest state, with an average of $992,054 won per draw in 2023. There were 62 draws and 146,496 winners across these draws. Thus, the state records an average of 2,363 lottery winners per draw, each taking home an average of $419.86.

Oregon ranks second, with an average of $973,291 in winnings per lottery draw. The state’s residents won $1.3 billion in the lottery in 2023 across 1,360 draws. There were 2,831 winners in 2023, with the average winning per winner in the state coming in at $343.78.

Louisiana comes in third place with an average of $515,406 in winnings per draw. In 2023, there were 296 draws in the state and 957,318 winners, which works out to 3,234 winners per draw.

California ranks fourth on the list, with $494,047 in winnings per draw. There were 621 draws in the state, with 35.1 million winners.

Florida rounds out the top five, recording $454,290 in winnings per draw on average in 2023. Virginia closely follows in sixth place, with $419,233 in winnings per draw on average.

In 2023, New York residents won an average of $386,234 per lottery draw, making it the seventh luckiest state. With an average of $256,455 in winnings per lottery draw, Illinois ranked eighth luckiest.

Michigan ranks ninth with $251,393 in winnings on average per draw, and Massachusetts is the tenth luckiest state with $229,222 in lottery winnings per draw on average.

“This study provides intriguing insights into the states with the highest average lottery winnings. While luck plays a significant role in the lottery, one might assume that states with more draws would have higher winnings. However, this study reveals an element of randomness in determining average winnings. For instance, Ohio has the highest average winnings despite having the fourth-lowest number of draws. On the other hand, Texas has the highest number of draws but ranks fourteenth in winnings per draw.”
