Mark S. Middlecoff, affectionately known to many as “Geneo Simmons,” passed away on October 14, 2026, leaving behind a lasting legacy of music, compassion, community service, and friendship.
A beloved Greenville resident since 1972, Mark dedicated much of his life to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Known for his generous spirit, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his community, Mark was especially passionate about helping young people reach their full potential.
Working alongside local business owners, Mark helped establish an initiative that provided meaningful employment opportunities for youth with disabilities. He also spearheaded projects to improve and beautify downtown Greenville, taking great pride in the community he called home. Through his mentorship, he encouraged young people to embrace the values of hard work, responsibility, and giving back to others.
Music was another great passion in Mark’s life. Known onstage as “Geneo Simmons,” he co-founded Sweet Pain, a prominent Midwest KISS tribute band that entertained audiences for more than 30 years. Among the band’s memorable performances were opening for rock legend Joan Jett in Fort Loramie, Ohio, and multiple appearances at the popular Boo & Brew events in Dayton’s Oregon District. Mark’s love of performing, larger-than-life stage presence, and dedication to his music brought joy to countless fans and fellow musicians.
Beyond the stage and his community involvement, Mark had an extraordinary love for animals. He volunteered countless hours at the local animal shelter, helping numerous dogs and cats find loving homes. His own dogs held an especially treasured place in his heart. He lovingly referred to them as his “babies” and considered them his closest companions.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Velda Mitchell and Spencer Middlecoff. He is survived by his sister, Laura Walton (Middlecoff); nephew, Nicholas Weherley; and niece, Natalie Decker.
Mark will be remembered not only for the music he played, but also for the lives he touched, the opportunities he created, and the kindness he shared so freely. His legacy lives on through the Greenville community he loved, the young people he mentored, the animals he helped save, and the many friends and family members who were fortunate enough to know him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, which would have been Mark’s birthday, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Greenville VFW, 219 N. Ohio St., Greenville, Ohio.
Family, friends, fellow musicians, and community members are invited to gather to celebrate Mark’s remarkable life, share memories, and honor a man whose heart was as big as his love for rock and roll.
His music may have ended, but the impact of his life will echo for generations to come.
