GREENVILLE – The Legislative Committee of the Greenville Business & Professional Women’s Club (BPW) hosted the September 10, 2026 meeting which was held at Sure Shot Tap House in downtown Greenville. The committee consisted of Chair Julie Hart and members Deb Niekamp, Dorothy Poeppelman, Stacy Sykes, Kasey Christian and Susan Fowble.
Dorothy Poeppelman introduced the featured speaker local attorney Ted Finnarn. He is a farmer representing the Ohio Farmers Union on the Agriculture Advisory Committee to the Division of Tax Equalization, regarding the Current Agricultural Use Valuation (CAUV) Law. Ted has been a member of that Advisory Committee for almost 50 years. Finnarn spoke on property taxes. He stated they began as part of the Ohio Constitution, at ’10 inside mills’ to support the county, township and schools. Your tax statement reflects your taxes at 35% of the value of your property. Credits, new legislation for tax relief and mills approved by voters have changed taxes over the years. Ted discussed the recent notice from the County Auditor. It is a re-evaluation of your property taxes which occurs every 3 years. A re-appraisal is every 6 years. In 1971 the State Income Tax was passed to help with local schools. In 1976 HB#920 passed for a reduced millage. Finnarn spoke of a movement underway to repeal the property taxes. A possible increase to 30% to the sales tax would be needed to compensate for the repeal of the property tax. He feels signatures will be gathered for this repeal to be on the ballot in 2027. Finnarn finished with the comment all property taxes we pay stay local (township, county, schools, library, etc.)

The Greenville BPW Club’s mission is to achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education, and information.
