GREENVILLE – The Light Foundation completed its fifth annual Timber Frame Leadership Camp with 19 campers attending the three day event at Chenoweth Trails on the Foundation’s 500-acre Greenville facility.
Matt Light, a Greenville graduate and three-time Super Bowl champion works directly with the campers along with the camp’s professional timber frame instructors including Caleb Miller and crew from JCM Timberworks located in Killbuck, OH.
“I look forward to it every year- we get to meet all these young people,” said Light. “We get to watch them take on some projects that are pretty daunting – running power saws for the first time, you have people looking over your shoulder and judging everything you’re doing. It can be pretty intimidating but the confidence this builds and seeing a project come together is very rewarding.”
The 2023 group had a project building a sturdy timber frame sawhorse, a project no different than building a post frame structure.
“This year is really unique because they’re taking this project home with them,” Light stated. “They get to show this off.”
Light is pleased with the leadership the campers display in helping each other and working together to complete this year’s take home project.
“We’ve already got a couple of these sawhorses these young men and ladies have completed,” Light said as time was winding down on the camp. “Now they are working with each other. They’re becoming little mini-instructors and helping the kids to the left and right of them so this is a lot of fun to watch.”
