I was super excited that I had the honor to cover the Darke County Senior Outreach dinner this past Wednesday at Romer’s in Greenville.
Many people were there because of an interest in the development of a fully functioning senior center in Darke County.
I knew many of them, but not all but am so grateful they all came together to work on this much-wanted project.
I was so glad to see that Carol Littman received the Darke County Senior of the Year award. She worked for the Community Action Partnership in Darke County for many years and that’s where I first made her acquaintance.
That organization was one of many I covered in my full-time newspaper reporting days. She was always helpful whenever I covered events there.
I am also glad they introduced Verah Barberine, a name I came across also in my early reporting days for the newspaper. I only saw her once I think but I’ve always remembered that name for some reason.
Soon, she will reach her 90th birthday and is still active. Not only is she working on getting this fully operating center for the senior citizens off the ground but she has been doing this since before COVID. And, she takes part in line dancing.
If I remember correctly, her name in the past was linked with dancing as well. I am so glad I got to meet her in person. She seems so nice and caring.
At our table, was a group of friends I’ve known for a long time and glad we got to spend that time together.
I am betting those who are interested in getting this project off the ground have a great time when they’re together at the facility on Jaysville-St. John Road.
Debbie Nestor Baker, president of the group, did a great job as did the other officers and committee members that were involved.
Now that I am a senior citizen, I may get involved one of these days if my health allows. I can’t make any promises though. But I won’t be line dancing, I’m sure of that.
