INDIANAPOLIS – The Gannon Knights and Tri-Village alum Layne Sarver capped an historic 34-3 season by winning the NCAA DII National Championship in convincing fashion, 84–61, over Lander.
Gannon started slowly but grabbed its first lead at 10–9 when Sarver knocked down a three. Minutes later, he buried a second triple to ignite a 15–0 Knights run. By halftime, Gannon had stretched the margin to 16, taking a 37–21 lead and never looking back.
In the second half, the Knights pushed the advantage to as many as 23 points and made life difficult for Lander around the rim. Gannon finished with nine blocks as a team, with Sarver swatting away two shots himself. When the final horn sounded, the Knights had secured the program’s first-ever National Championship.
For Sarver, the title is the crowning moment of a basketball journey that began when he was just a little kid, tagging along to his older sister’s and brother’s games and practices, soaking up the sport almost by osmosis.
His sister, Kayla (Linkous) Fisherback, was a four-year standout at Tri-Village and remains the school’s all-time leading scorer girls and boys with 2,235 points and 1,183 rebounds. She led the Patriots to the OHSAA DIV State Final Four in 2012 before going on to a strong career at Cedarville University.
His brother, Colton Linkous, scored over 1,387 points at Tri-Village and is forever remembered for hitting “The Shot” at the Schott in the OHSAA DIV State Championship game, delivering Tri-Village its first basketball state title and a perfect 30–0 season. Colton also enjoyed a successful career at Cedarville.
“All I’ve ever known is sports from being a little kid, either being at something for my sister or brother and always getting dragged to one of their games or practices,” Layne recalls.
On this night, the roles were reversed. Kayla, Colton, and the rest of the family were in the stands, watching Layne take center stage.
“You know it’s crazy how things work and now it’s me continuing the family tradition through college, to now winning a national title with all of them being here to watch me. It’s been pretty special!” Sarver exclaimed.
A standout quarterback and track athlete in addition to his basketball success, Sarver also claimed an individual state championship in the high jump, further padding one of the most decorated multi-sport résumés in Tri-Village history.
“I think I can now say I have had the better career, it’s going to be fun to brag and talk about for years to come,” Layne chuckled.
Then he turned more reflective.
“In all seriousness, it feels surreal right now, especially with just how busy we have been. I haven’t really gotten the time to just think about it. Having this be my last year, last game and going out like this … I couldn’t really ask for much more or for a better ending,” Layne concluded.
For a family built on big moments, Layne’s national championship may be the biggest yet—and the perfect final chapter to an unforgettable career.
