Lady Wave run rules Xenia for sweep

XENIA – The Greenville Lady Wave defeated Xenia 13-1 in five innings, earning a sweep of the Lady Buccaneers in 2025 Miami Valley League play.

“Great day for Lady Wave Softball,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “We played hard and hit the ball square. Everyone played, and it was a fun day for the girls.”

Greenville senior second baseman Kylar Arnett led off the game with a line drive triple to right and scored on a Lizzie Shaffer sacrifice fly, giving the Lady Wave a 1-0 lead. Pinch runner Bri Klosterman scored on a Leah Force ground out to second, giving Greenville a 2-0 lead.

“We came out aggressive and playing fast, led by Arnett off the get-go,” Newland stated. “Riley Thomas did very well behind the plate tonight.”

The Lady Wave put the game away in the top of the second scoring seven runs beginning with a Rielynn Davidson one out single, a Cloe Shuttleworth single to center, Davidson scoring on a wild pitch, an Arnett RBI double, a Zoey Burns run scoring single to left, a Shaffer single, a Leah Force RBI single, and a run scoring single off the bat of Kendall Cromwell upping the Lady Wave lead to 9-0 with the Lady Buccaneers coming to the plate in the bottom of the second.

Greenville tacked on two runs in the top of the third with a Kara Blumenstock single to center, a Morgan Thompson walk, a Burns RBI groundout, and a Shaffer RBI single to center for an 11-0 Lady Wave advantage.

Blumenstock drilled a two-out fourth-inning double to center and scored the Lady Wave’s 12th run on a Klosterman RBI single.

Xenia picked up its lone run of the night in the bottom of the fourth, and Greenville scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, giving the Lady Wave a run-rule conference win over the Lady Buccaneers.

Burns earned the win for Greenville, pitching 3.0 innings of shutout ball on two hits, no walks while striking out six. Shaffer tossed 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one earned run, two hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.

“Zoey Burns was lights out and Lizzie Shaffer finished,” said Newland.

Arnett paced the Lady Wave, going 2-2 with a double and a triple, 1 RBI, and two runs scored. Shaffer went 2-2, 2 RBIs, one run; Davidson 2-4, 1 RBI, one run; Blumenstock 2-4 including a double, one run; Force 1-3, 2 RBI, one run; Klosterman 1-1, 1 RBI, two runs; Burns 1-3, 2 RBIs; Cromwell 1-2, 1 RBI; Shuttleworth 1-3, a walk, 1 RBI, two runs; Reese Stewart 1 run; Caleight Stebbins 1 run; Rylie Pfledderer 1 walk, one run; Thompson 1 walk; Jaelyn Christman 1 walk; Lily Brubaker 3 walks.

“Kids are excited for the week and the opportunity ahead,” Coach Newland said. “Excited for the trip to Vandalia … at Butler, at Piqua next two days.”

The Lady Wave travels to Vandalia-Butler today, Tuesday, April 22, with a 5 p.m. start time and has a road game at Piqua, Wednesday, April 23, beginning at 5 p.m.

The Greenville girls return home for a Friday game with Piqua and a Saturday home game with Centerville at Lady Wave Stadium, with a noon start.

With the win, Greenville improves to 12-1 (9-0) on the season.
