“Senior day, five great kids but more importantly proud of everybody, proud of the kids,” Coach Newland stated. “Great job out of the seniors today – just fun for the kids.”

The five seniors sport a 75-12 career record over three years after having their freshman year cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.

The LWSB program honored the 2020 team when coach Newland presented them with white helmets that were intended to be worn by the 2020 team. Coach Newland pulled the helmets out of storage recently.

“It’s just a shame they didn’t have that first year of the COVID 2020 because they’re seniors but this year those white helmets we’re wearing now, those are the 2020 helmets,” Newland explained. “It took me two years to get them out because it’s just a little tough for me.”

“When I asked those five seniors if they wanted to wear the 2020 team helmets and everybody shed a little tear. That’s what is driving us for the rest of this because it’s not our name on the back, it’s the name on the front.”

“I pulled those white helmets out because if figured that would be a way the 2020 team could be a part of this senior class,” added Newland. “When I gave those seniors the white helmets a couple weeks ago it was a pretty emotional moment.”

The teams played to a 0-0 scored after two innings of play before the Lady Wave exploded for five-runs in the bottom of the third including a Kylar Arnett two-run triple and added two-runs in the fourth, a two-run homer off the bat of Zoey Burns.
