GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave JV team defeated the visiting Indian Lady Lakers JV squad 35-18, holding the Indian Lake to 6 points through the first three-quarters of non-conference basketball action.
“It was a great team win,” said Greenville Lady Wave JV coach Craig Riethman. “The girls set the tone early defensively, only giving up two points in the first quarter and zero points in the second quarter.”
Greenville jumped out to a double-digit 12-2 first-quarter lead, with Aubrey Baumgardner pacing the Lady Wave with four points and Karstya Davidson hitting a 3-pointer.
The Lady Wave held the Lady Lakers scoreless in the second quarter while adding seven points, sending the teams to the break with Greenville holding a 19-2 advantage.
“They were locked in,” Coach Riethman noted. “We’ve been working a lot on positioning defensively, and they are starting to figure it out.”
“When we’re locked in defensively like that, we’re going to be very hard to beat or blow out,” he added. “As long as we are strong defensively, we’re going to have a chance to win.”
Period No. 3 went to the Lady Wave by an 11-4 score led by five Leah Force points and a Brooklyn Crampton triple for a 30-6 Greenville lead with one quarter to play.
“We ran a lot of our offense through Leah Force,” said Riethman. “She did a nice job of getting to the basket or opening things up, drawing to and kicking out for another opportunity for somebody else.”
The Greenville JV squad had 14 players in uniform, including nine freshmen, who all got in the game for the win.
“The kids are wonderful,” Riethman said. “The girls are doing a good job, allowing us to be very picky without getting frustrated because there is a lot to learn and little time to do it. They understand that and want to win, so they’re responding very well.”
