GREENVILLE – After rolling to an 11-2 win over Covington earlier Saturday, the Greenville Lady Wave found themselves in a much different battle in the second game of the day.
Held hitless and scoreless through the first five innings, Greenville finally erupted in the bottom of the sixth, scoring all 10 runs in a dramatic walk-off 10-0 run-rule victory over Wayne.
For five innings, neither team could break through as Greenville went down in order through the first four innings and managed only a walk in the fifth. But with the score still tied 0-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Wave offense suddenly came alive.
Greenville sent 10 batters to the plate and scored eight runs before recording an out.
Jordyn McMullen started the rally with a double to right field, and Bri Klosterman followed with a bunt single. Leah Force then reached on a Wayne error that allowed the game’s first run to score for a 1-0 Greenville lead. Ella Oswalt followed with a two-run double to center to make it 3-0.
Lizzie Shaffer singled to center, and Kendall Cromwell added an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0. Rielynn Davidson then reached on an error, and Kara Blumenstock drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run for a 5-0 advantage.
Lily Brubaker kept the inning moving with an RBI single to center, making it 6-0. McMullen then picked up her second hit of the inning, lining a two-run single to center field to extend the Greenville lead to 8-0.
After back-to-back outs, Oswalt came through again in walk-off fashion, drilling a two-run single to left field to score Caleigh Stebbins and Lily Brubaker, ending the game with Greenville on top 10-0.
“Great day for Lady Wave Softball,” said Greenville veteran Hall of Fame coach Jerrod Newland. “Spot on defense – errorless for the day.”
Oswalt paced the Greenville offense, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. McMullen also had two hits, with both batters’ two hits coming during the explosive sixth inning.
Shaffer was outstanding in the circle for Greenville. The junior tossed a six-inning shutout, allowing no runs while striking out eight and walking just one.
“Liz was very sharp and dialed in today,” Newland said. “Threw a gem and hit very well too. Shutout game, which means ice cream.”
Wayne’s starter worked 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits and 10 runs, six of them earned, while striking out three and walking two.
Greenville’s defense also continued to shine, backing Shaffer with error-free play. The Lady Wave did not commit a single error in either of its two Saturday wins.
“We really played some awesome defense and attacked the zone today on the mound,” Newland said of Greenville’s pair of Saturday afternoon victories.
The Lady Wave will return to action Monday when they host Fairborn.
