PIQUA – The Greenville Lady Wave defeated the Piqua Lady Indians 9-1 in Monday night MVL softball action.
“Kids played fast and hard,” said Greenville coach, Jerrod Newland. “Came out and got two early and played great defensively.”
The Lady Wave took advantage of the first of seven Piqua errors with leadoff hitter Skylar Fletcher reaching by way of an error, a Kendall Cromwell single and a 2-run single to left off the bat of Zoey Burns.
The Lady Indians plated its lone run of the night in the bottom of the first sending the game to the second with Greenville leading 2-1.
Greenville plated three runs in the top of the second to lead 5-1, added a single run in the top of the sixth and used back to back doubles off the bats of Burns and Ashlyn Zimmer, a Kylar Arnett single and a Lily Brubaker sacrifice fly to center to plate three runs in the seventh to earn the conference win.
“Kids are excited for the opportunities that are all ahead of us,” Coach Newland said following the win. “So excited for the month of April to be winding down and gearing up for an amazing May atmosphere.”
Greenville’s Burns went the distance on the mound allowing one earned run on two hits, four walks while striking out 10.
Burns paced the Lady Wave at the plate going 2-3 including a double and 3-RBIs. Fletcher went 2-4 with 2-runs scored; Zimmer 2-4 including a double, 1-RBI, 1-run; Addie Burke 1-3, 1-run; Haleigh McDermitt 1-3, 1-run; Cromwell 1-4, 2-RBIs, 1-run; Arnett 1-4, 1-run; Brubaker 1-RBI, 1-run and Morgan Thompson 1-run.
Greenville played error free ball. Piqua committed seven errors on the night.
“Now 11-4 overall and 8-1 in MVL with a big one here (Greenville) Tuesday vs Piqua and Butler coming to LWSB Stadium Wednesday,” Newland noted.
