GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave Softball team defeated the visiting Sidney Lady Yellow Jackets on Senior Night at Lady Wave Stadium in short order by a run-rule 14-0 score.
“What a great day at Lady Wave Stadium,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “A lot of people a lot of fun.”
Greenville City Schools honored six seniors, No. 1 Savannah Leach, No. 6 Skylar Bryson, No. 7 Haleigh McDermitt, No. 10 Addie Burke, No. 13 Mahayla Cook, and No. 14 Ella McLear, before the game.
“It was a fun day here,” Newland said. “Six great kids, they all played, they all hit the ball or got on base … fun stuff, neat stuff.”
Coach Newland reached into his playbook to use the leading-off too soon keeping the game respectable in winning its 15th conference game of the 2024 season.
“Played all 22 kids, it was awesome,” Newland stated. “Got them all in, played kids, we played a little defense. They have three or four scrappy kids that come out and ready to play.”
The Lady Wave plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kylar Arnett reached base with the aid of a Sidney error, stole second, and scored on a Zoey Burns single to center.
Kendall Cromwell sent an RBI single to center for a 2-0 score, Leach picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center, and pinch runner Clair Royer scampered home on a passed ball, giving the Lady Wave a 4-0 advantage with one inning in the book.
Second inning Arnett and Cook walks set up a two-run double off the bat of McLear, a McLear steal of third and a passed ball had McLear racing home with the Lady Wave’s seventh run of the game. McDermitt lashed a two-out RBI to right, and Bryson sent a run-scoring single to left, giving LWSB a 9-0 lead after two complete.
Greenville loaded the base with one down in the third with three straight walks. Burke followed with a two-run single to center, Leach knocked an RBI single to left, McDermitt drove a run-scoring single to center, a Lady Wave was called out leaving the base too soon and pinch runner Kara Blumenstock scored on a passed ball for the final Lady Wave run of the night with three innings on the board bringing wholesale substitution from the Greenville bench.
“Can’t wait to get on the bus tomorrow (Thursday), that’s the bottom line,” said Coach Newland. “Game 26, league game 17 and I’m excited for our opportunities and can’t wait for next week with the tournament but more importantly the next 24 hours, these next two league games.”
