DARKE COUNTY – Fort Greenville DAR invites everyone to attend a marker dedication in honor of William Townsend, an American Revolutionary War soldier. The dedication will be on July 8 at 7:00 pm. The gravesite is located at Martin Cemetery, Greenville Township. The cemetery is located on the south side of Culbertson Road (Township Road 198) about 0.3 miles west of its intersection with Hartzell Road (Township Road 118).
William Townsend was born 1759 probably Bucks County PA and died September 4, 1824 Darke County. He is buried in Martin Cemetery. He served as a Soldier in South Carolina under Colonel Brandon’s Militia. Townsend may have participated in the battles at Kings Mountain and Cowpens while serving in Brandon’s South Carolina Militia.
He was the son of John Townsend. The family was Quaker and lived in Newberry District, South Carolina and lived on Paget’s Creek. The family attended the Bush River Quaker monthly meetings. On Jan. 27, 1781 William and his brother James were “disowned” at the monthly meeting-“hath been found guilty of taking up arms and going out in a warlike manner for which misconduct of theirs this meeting appoints–“. William and family moved to Warren County, now Clinton, about 1808 with many other Quaker families from the Newberry District. About 1818, the family moved to Darke County.
