DARKE COUNTY – Every Monday beginning September 8th, the center will have a series of healthy living workshops from 1 – 3:30 pm. The workshop will provide information and opportunities to learn skills and habits to help manage one’s health. The class is free but will run for six consecutive weeks (the last class being October 13th). The class size is limited to twenty participants; therefore, an RSVP is necessary.

This workshop is an interactive, evidence-based series from the Self-Management Resource Center which provides real-life strategies, encouragement & connection for those living with chronic conditions. The program is open to participants who are 60 or older.

Each week, practical skills such as better sleep, problem-solving, pain management, healthy eating, better breathing, and working effectively with your healthcare provider will be covered. Learn how to create new habits towards managing your health to keep doing what matters to you most. The workshops will be led by two trained peer leaders, Shelly Acker and Debra McMullen. Both ladies have personal experience living with and/or caring for someone with chronic conditions.

Statistically, 20% of health is determined in the doctor’s office, while 80% is within your control. Take an active role in your health and wellness by attending this free program funded by the Older Americans Act, made possible through Area Agency on Aging and offered by the Darke County Senior Center at the Birchwood Senior Center, 5844 Jaysville-St. Johns Rd, Greenville. All workshop materials are provided.

To reserve your space for this informative workshop, please text or call Wally at 508-789-3884 or Mary at 937/423-2565 promptly.

Thursday, September 11th, has much to offer the Senior sect. Seniors have different needs and concerns from the working class. After all, none of us has ever been this old before!

Each day brings new experiences, sometimes in the form of challenges and at other times in the form of wisdom. So, it makes perfect sense to offer a social hour from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm entitled “Getting to Know You”, followed by “Planning Ahead” beginning at 1:00 pm.

“Getting to Know You” will be an informal social hour to learn more about the people you have been attending craft classes with or other events at the center. You may find yourself mentoring a newly retired individual, or find a shopping buddy or a card shark that will elevate your card-playing skills. The hour can be a wonderful time to reconnect with others. Then from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, there will be informational presentations which address hot topics that some may have been reluctant to discuss but want answers, nonetheless. These professionals will be able to answer questions, discuss a variety of options and provide the resources you might have been looking for.

At 1:00 pm Wayne Fourman of May Financial will discuss and answer questions concerning financial planning and social security. At 1:45 pm, Tiffany Labig of Everheart Hospice will explain healthcare directives, such as the Power of Attorney, Living Will, and the DNR. Toni Price of Zecher Bailey will present on funeral planning at 2:30 pm.

An Alzheimer’s Support Group will be held on the third Wednesday of every month, starting on Wednesday, September 17th, from 5 – 7:00 pm. The Support Group will be facilitated by trained individuals and designed to support, assist, and educate. This can be a valuable resource for those caregivers, family, friends, and others challenged with the various stages of Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Spread the news to others, there is help and no one needs to go it alone.

During September, “Basic Computer Skills for Seniors” will be offered each Tuesday at the Birchwood Senior Center, 5844 Jaysville-St. Johns Road, Greenville. Bring any device for your learning. The class runs from 11:30 – 12:30 pm and is open to any interested person age 55+.

The weekly schedule breaks down accordingly:

9/2: BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS participants will learn about the keyboard and how to log in and out of their devices.

9/9: EMAIL, GOOGLE DRIVE, & OFFICE SKILLS. Everyone will learn how to use and operate email, Google Drive and basic office skills. This will be a great time to ask lots of questions.

9/16: INTERNET SKILLS. Everyone learns how to navigate and use the internet to their advantage.

9/23: SOCIAL MEDIA. All can learn how to do basic functions of social media apps, including YouTube.
9/30: STAYING SAFE ON THE COMPUTER. No series would be complete without learning tips on how to keep your data and devices safe.

All events, except Bingocize (which is held at Oakley Place) take place at the Birchwood Senior Center, 8544 Jaysville-St. Johns Road, Greenville. All events are open to anyone 55+ who is willing to become a member ($2 annual membership fee). Guests are welcome to experience the center before joining.

Please be aware that some events require an RSVP by the specified date indicated with an asterisk (*). Those RSVPs can be made by texting or calling Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565.

None of these events would be possible without the availability of the Birchwood Center and our gracious donors, for which we are forever grateful. Most recently, we wish to thank Rest Haven, Tribute Funeral Home, Wayne Health Care, Spirit Medical Transport, EverHeart Hospice, Brethren Retirement Community, Versailles Rehab and Healthcare, Oakley Place, Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Village Green, Orthopedic Associates of SW Ohio, Comprehensive Health Network, Buckeye Forest, Brookdale, and JAG Healthcare. However, funding is a constant necessity, which means donations are continually needed and forever appreciated. Interested individuals, groups, or corporations should contact Heather Stith at 937-417-2648 or send a pledge/donation directly to Darke County Senior Outreach, P.O. Box 1019, Greenville, OH 45331.

Thanks also to the dedicated volunteers who work countless hours behind the scenes to organize and staff all the programs available. Some of these people include Theresa Kress, Annie Kuebel, Mary Rader, Diana Reeder, Verah Berberine, Shelly Acker, Carol Hosbrook-Cole, Denise Palivec, Mary Rodehefer, and “Wally” Wollenhaupt. The activities offered have grown through the vision and hard work of these men and women. More volunteers are also needed.
