GREENVILLE – Senior libero Shyanne Gibboney set the Greenville career digs record for the Lady Wave varsity volleyball program in a Thursday night 3-0 MVL win over the Stebbins Lady Indians.
“I am very excited; I had no clue,” Gibboney said about playing as a starting freshman while not considering earning a school record. “I was just excited to have any playing time on JV.”
Gibboney earned the record-setting mark in the second set with her 919th career dig, a record previously held by Lisa Brinley.
“I am so pleased that Shyanne earned the all-time career digs leader record, and doing that in front of the home crowd is very special for her,” said Greenville head varsity volleyball coach Michelle Hardesty.
“Very proud of Shyanne,” said assistant coach Jim Hardesty. “That is a very big accomplishment leading Greenville in digs for a career and it’s only getting started this year.”
The Greenville senior is the smallest player for opposing teams in nearly all volleyball matches, but size goes unnoticed due to her big-time play and leadership on the court.
“Size does not matter … she plays big,” Michelle Hardesty stated. “She has worked hard the last three years to get to that record, and it’s still growing. We’re early in the season, so the record will be whatever it is the last match of her senior year.”
“She is always out there directing traffic,” Coach Hardesty added. “We have her take care of the backcourt, and she drives traffic. She calls seams, makes sure people are where they need to be, and is a great team leader, which is very encouraging to other players.”
