Over the past several weeks, there has been an increase in police activity in the business district along Broadway Street in the City of Greenville. This increase is directly related to the presence of several individuals experiencing homelessness who have been staying in the area. It is important to emphasize that homelessness itself is not a crime. However, we have responded to a number of incidents connected to this issue, including but not limited to littering, disorderly conduct, trespassing, possession of open containers of alcohol, and aggravated menacing. These incidents have resulted in multiple citations and arrests. We are actively coordinating with various partners to address these concerns.
While I empathize with the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness, public safety remains the top priority of the Greenville Police Department. We are committed to working with mental health professionals, the court system, and local housing programs to pursue long-term, compassionate solutions to this complex issue.
In the meantime, we ask that citizens remain vigilant and report any criminal activity to the Greenville Police Department. Your cooperation is essential in helping us maintain a safe and welcoming community for everyone.
